MIC-1 aims to investigate how precision nutrition can enhance Gut Microbiota (GM) resilience in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) improving tolerance and clinical outcomes to chemotherapy by an innovative translational approach combining Omics, an in vitro simulator of the gastrointestinal tract (SHIME®) and ex vivo patient-derived intestinal organoids. In detail, MIC-1 aims: 1) to profile GM during oncological treatment and nutritional interventions for identification of microbial, metabolic, and functional signatures linked to resilience and response (Omics), (2) to discover GM-derived compounds useful as biomarkers for monitoring therapy efficacy and disease progression, (3) to study GM-host interactions at the cellular and molecular level for elucidating mechanisms by which GM adapts or recovers (organoids-Omics), 4) test GM restoration strategies in vitro (SHIME).
