This project took advantage from the expertise of the Research Group in Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) to characterize the elemental profile of neural Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients compared to healthy controls (HC). The final purpose was to identify possible markers for the diagnosis, progression (longitudinal evaluation) and response to pharmacological treatments. In AD, several evidence has pointed out the important role of neural EVs in diagnosis as well as in the monitoring of disease progression. Neural EVs are released from cells of the central nervous system and due to their ability to cross the blood-brain barrier can represent biomarkers for monitoring the brain tissue status through peripheral blood sampling.
