The PROMED-COG project aimed to integrate epidemiological and intervention research to generate new and critical insights into the role of undernutrition in neurocognitive ageing. It investigated how these effects vary according to sex, genetic risk, and the timing of undernutrition exposure, and how changes in dietary and physical activity behaviours may help reduce the burden of undernutrition and neurodegeneration. This work is of major public health relevance given Europe’s rapidly ageing population and the established link between undernutrition and dementia risk. The resulting scientific evidence will be translated into public health and clinical practice recommendations to prevent undernutrition and support healthy neurocognitive ageing among older European citizens.
