This pilot pharmacogenomics project on smoking cessation therapies aims to investigate individual variability in treatment response, which remains below 50% even with pharmacological support. We hypothesize that genetic factors influence cessation success and systemic inflammation. The study will enroll 250 smokers at the Smoking Cessation Center of Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, collecting clinical and biological data and performing genome-wide genotyping of over 900,000 polymorphisms. Key goals include validating the role of the rs503464 polymorphism, assessing the effect of communicating this genetic information to the patients on their success in quitting smoking, identifying new genetic variants linked to therapy response, and assessing inflammatory changes after quitting. Expected outcomes will support personalized treatments and preventive strategies to reduce smoking-related diseases.
