locations
Segrate (Milan Research Area)
The Institute’s headquarters are located in Segrate, in the LITA building, within the Milan Research Area 4. This site represents the core of ITB-CNR’s scientific and technological activities and hosts research groups operating across all four of the Institute’s main research domains:
- Bioinformatics, Computational Biology and Artificial Intelligence
- Cellular and Tissue Biomedicine
- Epidemiology and Physiology
- Omics and Related Technologies
The Milan units develop and apply advanced methodologies for the study of biological systems and human health, combining computational approaches, experimental biomedicine, population studies, and high-throughput technologies. The close interaction among these research areas promotes a strongly multidisciplinary environment, supporting both fundamental and translational biomedical research.

Bari Research Area
ITB-CNR has a Secondary Office within the Bari Research Area (atrbari.cnr.it). The activities carried out by Bari’s research Unit span two main research areas:
- Bioinformatics, Computational Biology and Artificial Intelligence
- Omics and Related Technologies
The research activity focuses on the integrated study of complex biological systems through the combination of bioinformatics and molecular approaches. The Unit develops and applies computational and AI-based methods to analyze multi-omics data, linking in silico analysis with experimental validation to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying health and disease. This interdisciplinary strategy supports national and international collaborations in computational and precision medicine. The Bari unit has also expertise in the management of computational research infrastructure.

Pisa Research Area
In addition to its main locations, ITB-CNR operates a Research Unit within the Pisa Research Area (https://www.area.pi.cnr.it/), contributing expertise in translational biomedicine, molecular oncology and human rare diseases. The Unit is well integrated in the local biomedical environment, collaborating with academic institutions, clinical centers, and national research infrastructures.
Research activities focus on:
- Cellular and Molecular Oncology
- Translational Cancer Research
- Functional Genomics and Precision Medicine
The Unit develops advanced experimental and analytical approaches to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying cancer development and therapeutic response, including tumor heterogeneity, signaling pathways, and biomarkers. It also studies the molecular bases of rare diseases and translates these discoveries into therapeutic approaches. By integrating experimental and computational methodologies, the Pisa Unit advances personalized medicine and actively contributes to national and international research collaborations.
