Neurological disorders and diseases
Research on neurological disorders and diseases at ITB spans basic, translational, clinical and epidemiological research, addressing the molecular, cellular, and systemic mechanisms underlying brain dysfunction. Active and past projects cover a wide spectrum of neurological and neurodevelopmental conditions, including Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer diseases, dementias and cognitive impairment, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, epilepsy, brain edema, and rare genetic syndromes.
Researchers investigate neuromodulatory pathways, synaptic and non‑canonical signaling, chromatin regulation, and neuroinflammation, combining these approaches with advanced bioinformatics, metabolomic, genomic, and imaging methodologies. Innovative experimental models, such as cerebral organoids, transcriptomics and multi‑omics profiling, are used to study disease mechanisms and identify biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Several projects integrate nutrition, gut–brain axis modulation, and personalized medicine strategies, as well as clinical and multi‑omics data, to predict disease progression and accelerate translational research. Overall, ITB aims to bridge fundamental neuroscience and clinical application to improve understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of neurological disorders.
