Tommaso Selmi

In the Selmi lab, we focus on two main areas of research. - The study of RNA modifications and their impact on mRNA translation. - The technological development of CRISPR Base Editors. We combine the latest genome editing and sequencing technologies to uncover novel regulatory mechanisms in cellular models of cancer and stem cells. LAB MEMBERS: Tommaso Selmi, PhD Principal Investigator. Martina Scichilone, PhD candidate, School of Experimental Medicine, UniMI. Our lab is funded by - PRIN 2022 - CN3- National Center for Gene Therapy and Drugs based on RNA Technology, PNRR 2022

Aree di interesse

I obtained a PhD in Molecular and Regenerative Medicine from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in 2013. In my PhD, I characterised a group of oncogenic mRNAs that are post-transcriptionally regulated by the TIS11 protein family in cancer cell lines. In 2014 I moved to University of Cambridge UK, to work on the (re-)emerging field of RNA modifications, in the lab of Michaela Frye. There, we produced a transcritpome-wide single nucleotide resolution map of NSUN6-dependent 5-methylcytosine (m5C), and investigated the effects of m5C and adenosine deamination on transcript turnover and codon decoding in human embryonic stem cells (Selmi, Hussain NAR 2021 - Bornelov, Selmi Genome Biol 2019). In 2019 I joined Horizon Discovery's Innovation team in Cambridge, UK to take part in the development of modular CRISPR base editors for precise genome editing (Collantes JC, The CRISPR Journal 2021). I joined the ITB @ Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche at the beginning of 2021.
