Alessandro Orro received his Ph.D. degree in electronics and computer engineering in February 2005, after a three-year course at the University of Cagliari, Italy, under the supervision of Professor G. Armano. He is currently working at Italian National Research Council at the Institute of Biomedical Technologies (CNR-ITB). His main research interests are in the field of Bioinformatics; in particular he is investigating multiple alignment algorithms and techniques for protein secondary structure prediction. The underlying techniques and tools, such as genetic algorithms and artificial neural networks, fall into the category of soft computing.
