I consider myself a clinical neurologist with interests in molecular biology and neuroimaging. In fact, during my university training, I developed a personal interest in genetics and MRI, which I tried to study in the subsequent course of my research activity, but always maintaining (in my opinion) a close contact with the clinical characteristics of the pathologies of interest, and therefore studying above all by looking at translational point of views. For this reason, I attended research institutes, in Italy and abroad (UK, USA), in order to learn not only new techniques but also innovative approaches to research. Back in Italy (late 2010), I started some of the lines of study that I currently follow; I have numerous contacts and collaborations with Clinical Centers of Neurology, CNR Institutes and other Research Institutions. At present I am responsible for some interesting projects concerning Neurodegenerative Diseases (especially Multiple Sclerosis, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Spinal Muscular Atrophy). I am honored to work with a group of colleagues whose skills range from biology to bioinformatics and biostatistics, up to chemistry and physics. In fact, I believe that no disease can be studied with a mono-disciplinary approach, but that comparisons and discussions among different expertise are essential. At the same time, I have an intense editorial activity as a reviewer of articles and research projects (national and international), which I consider important as well for professional growth and intellectual stimuli.

A multidisciplinary search of molecular markers associated with the response to treatment in adult Spinal Muscular Atrophy

the main aim of this longitudinal prospective observation will be to find suitable markers for treatment monitoring and responsiveness in adult SMA patients. By using a multidisciplinary strategy, the final goal will be to build a platform of bioinformatics/biostatistics analysis of integrated clinical, biochemical and molecular data that will be able to distinguish between responders and non-responders to Nusinersen. Given the extensive approach that we are going to apply, and the expertise of the Partners in the field, additional aim of this project will be to possibly find genetic biomarkers associated with the side effects of Nusinersen or other clinical parameters, such as the clinical progression of the disease.
